How to Request Public Records

Whether you're looking for your own records, records for family members, bulk data or making a public information request, the information below should point you in the right direction.

Choose from the list below to learn how to request records

Marriage or divorce records

Marriage certificates and divorce decrees are not available online. To request a certified copy of a marriage certificate or divorce decree, contact the clerk's office in the county where the marriage occurred.

Information about dates of marriage and divorce may be searched online, but marriage licenses or certificates are not available for these records:

For help searching marriage or divorce records, contact the clerk's office in your county or seek help from the Indiana State Library.

Adoption records

Adoption records are confidential under Indiana law and are not available online. If you have participated in an adoption and are trying to connect with a family member, learn more about the Adoption Matching Registry from the Indiana State Department of Health.

A birth or death certificate

Birth and death certificates may be ordered online, by mail or by phone through the Indiana State Department of Health.

Criminal history, arrest or other police records

These are records maintained by law enforcement agencies and not by courts. The Indiana State Police offers criminal history services, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation offers an Identity History Summary.

To find contact information for local law enforcement, see mylocal.in.gov and select your county or city from the list.

You may search mycase.in.gov for criminal court records, but this website is not for conducting a complete criminal history. The site does not include records for all courts in Indiana, and how far back the records go varies by county.

Property lien or tax information

These are records maintained by the county in which the property is located and may be available from the County Auditor, County Treasurer, or County Assessor. To find contact information for county offices, see mylocal.in.gov and select your county from the list.

Wills

Wills are not usually available online, but may be available in the clerk's office if the will was filed. To request a certified copy of a will or other estate document, contact the clerk's office in the county where the case is heard.

Other court or case records not listed above, including transcripts

Generally, you may request court records and documents from the clerk's office in the county where the case was heard. You may request a transcript for a specific hearing or trial from the court reporter. Contact the court or clerk's office to request these documents.

You may also search mycase.in.gov for family, civil, criminal and appellate court records that are not confidential. Some documents in some cases may be available, but if you aren't able to access a document on mycase.in.gov, it simply isn't available online. In that instance, contact the clerk's office in the county where the case is heard. Note that mycase.in.gov does not include records for all courts in Indiana, and how far back the records go varies by county.
